Some people say that the definition of independence is a complex word and idea to try to define. In al truth independence is a perplexing word to try to define. This is because everybody has their own speculations of what independence is. Very Infrequently are their two people that have the same perception of what the definition of independence is. What I perceive the definition of independence is the absolute freedom to do what you want, and to not be held back by any rules or laws of government or man, but by the rules and laws of nature and your own self concise.My view of Independence may greatly differ form your beliefs on the definition but In this paper I will try to show exactly what my perspective on the deflation of independence is by my experiences, my beliefs, my thoughts, and research on the subject at hand. I felt this felling when I am by myself and nothing is around you but woods, waterfalls or complete silence. I get this feeling of independence because there Is nobody around to tell you what to do and you can do anything that you want. For example when I went to Colorado two years back I was searching for the feeling of independence by what I thought the definition of independence is. I found it in places that are serine and quite with the only thing around Is the mountains , a waterfall and the woods. I got the feeling I found the feeling of independence their because their was no law governing me, nothing to stop me from doing what I wanted, and the only thing their to hold be back was nature Itself. That feeling and experience was another one of my building blocks for my definition of Independence.Another building block for my definition of Independence Is through my research and my thoughts on the true definition of independence. In Webster Revised 1 OFF the state of being independent and the freedom of being dependent from the control of others and the direction of ones own affairs without interference. Through my thoughts of this one definition of independence which is very similar to mine I can see why the f ight for independence has been fought so much. Through some deliberation on my part I came upon the reason why people fought so many wars and fought so hard for independence.They fought so hard for independence for the mere chance to have to answer to nobody, not to be controlled by anybody, to have the ability to do what they wanted to do without having any interference from others. Thanks to my research and deliberating, my beliefs, and my personal experiences with the definition of independence I believe that I came up with a good strong definition of independence. Which is the ability to live any way you want, to do what you want when you want, not to have to live with the rules and laws of man and government, but only by the rules of nature and what you set for yourself.

How to Apply to the Senate Page Program
Have you ever considered taking some time away from your regular routine to pursue something new, exciting, and completely different? We probably all have, and while there are tons of opportunities that might fit the bill, few are feasible in terms of time commitment, academics, or financial concerns. But, for students interested in pursuing a career in politics, government, or law, there is one program that may address all of the concerns above. This program is offered both during the school year and during summer months, provides appropriate and rigorous academic course work during the school year, and actually pays you for the work you do. Oh, and it also comes with a ton of prestige and recognition. If this sounds like a good deal to you, read on to learn how you can apply to the Senate Page Program. The Senate Page Program is a fancy term for an official high school internship at the U.S. Senate in Washington D.C.. This program is offered only to high school juniors and provides the opportunity to work with actual senators and government leaders. Students in the Senate Page Program are sponsored by local senators and work for their sponsoring senatorââ¬â¢s party in the U.S. Senate. Senate Pages are mostly messengers. They deliver messages and legislative materials to U.S. Senators, Congressmen, and other staff members at the Hart Senate Office Building. They also prepare the chambers for daily business and stand by for tasks while Congress is in session. While doing so, they gain important exposure in the fields of government and politics. The program is highly selective, with only 30 Senate Pages accepted each term. à There are four terms annually. One begins in the fall for four months, another begins in the spring for five months, and two shorter terms start at the beginning of each summer. During the school year, the Senate Page Program is a residential program. Pages live together in a dorm located two blocks from the Hart Senate Building. They take classes beginning at 6:15 AM daily and after classes, pages work while Senate is in session, typically from 10AM ââ¬â 4PM, though sometimes much longer if Senate has not adjourned for the day. Pages are provided breakfast and dinner daily, and pay for their room and board out of the stipend they earn through working as a page. The stipend is generally modest, reportedly based off of a roughly $26,000 annual salary, and uniform costs are also taken from it. The summer term is slightly different. There is no academic component during summer months and pages are permitted to live with friends or relatives, rather than in the dorm. Dorm residency is still available for those who choose it. While enrolled in the program, students are held to exceptionally high standards for conduct and dress. Room inspections are conducted regularly and students should expect to spend 12-13 hours studying and working each day. It is a rigorous schedule and pages are required to have a doctorââ¬â¢s approval before beginning the program. Senate Pages must be in their junior year of high school. If youââ¬â¢re interested in the summer terms, you may be either a rising junior or a rising senior. You must be 16 or 17 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a student. In order to apply, you must have a GPA of at least 3.0. Pages are sponsored by individual senators. Each senator is usually given the chance to sponsor a page during only one term per year, and he or she generally alternates between male and female pages each year. Because you must apply through a senator, the exact application process and selection criteria vary. Many senators provide more precise information on their websites. Most senators will only sponsor students from the state they represent, but this is not the case for all senators. If you need to apply for a specific term and your senator is not sponsoring a page that term, you should not discount the opportunity. Instead, research nearby states to see if their senators sponsor out-of-state students. If you canââ¬â¢t find the information you need, call their office directly and ask. Our Early Advising Program helps students in 9th and 10th grade discover their passions and build strong academic and extracurricular profiles to succeed in high school. Because you apply for sponsorship directly through a senator, the application process varies by office. In most cases, you submit an initial application along with a resume and several written recommendations. In some cases you also need to submit a transcript and write an essay. If you advance past the first round, you will likely be invited for a series of interviews. The program is extremely competitive, so if you make it to the interview phase, be sure to practice ahead of time and arrive on time and dressed professionally.à Due to the competitive nature of the program, you will need to leverage every advantage that you can to your favor. It is politics, after all. For this reason, try to find personal and professional connections that will give you a leg above the rest. Some senators might require that you submit at least one recommendation from a teacher, adviser, or head of school. If this is the case, choose the most established professional who knows you well. If you have a good relationship with your head of school and you believe that he or she can speak specifically to your strengths, go ahead and ask for a recommendation. If, however, you arenââ¬â¢t sure that your head of school even knows who you are, work your way down the line of command until you find someone who knows you well. Another strong recommendation should come from a teacher who has instructed you in a related content area. This could be your AP U.S. Government teacher, your Mock Trial adviser, or another teacher who knows your abilities well. If you are asked for more than two recommendations, try to find someone who is well-connected and has political ties to supply the third. This is the time to call your uncleââ¬â¢s college roommate to arrange a lunch meeting, or hit up your best friendââ¬â¢s motherââ¬â¢s cousin for a coffee date. While these people may not know you very well, if they are connected politically, their word might carry much more weight than someone elseââ¬â¢s. Although it is a general rule of thumb that you should not seek recommendations from people who do not know you well, if your senator seeks more than two recommendations, it is not a bad idea to try to find someone with political ties to supply the third recommendation. Donââ¬â¢t blindly ask for a recommendation from someone who hasnââ¬â¢t seen you since you were in diapers, though. Instead, arrange a time to meet together to discuss your plans and ambitions. When you do so, be not only honest about your intentions but also upfront about your qualifications. Your job is to clearly articulate to this person why you are qualified and deserving of becoming a Senate Page. If you can convince this person that youââ¬â¢re a worthy candidate, he or she might be able to convince your sponsoring senator. Also, keep in mind the weight of the favor this person is lending you. Be extremely gracious and make sure that you arrive early so that you donââ¬â¢t keep anyone waiting. Ask for advice and do as much listening as you do talking. Even if you donââ¬â¢t end up becoming a Senate Page, this person could be a valuable mentor if you intend to pursue a career in government or politics.à The Senate Page Program is one of the most competitive high school programs in the country. Each term, only 30 pages are selected nationally. Of these, 15 are males and 15 are females. Itââ¬â¢s unknown exactly how many students apply each year, since all applicants go through a sponsoring senator, but itââ¬â¢s safe to say that only a tiny proportion of applicants go on to become Senate Pages. Like anything in politics, connections play an important role in identifying top candidates. Further, because the number of page roles is fewer than the number of senators, senior senators are more likely to successfully appoint a page and even then, senators may only sponsor one page per year. à à Just because you donââ¬â¢t have any connections doesnââ¬â¢t mean you canââ¬â¢t become a Senate Page. It is completely possible to make your own connections as an involved high school student. If youââ¬â¢re interested in government or politics and you know that you want to become a Senate Page, start working towards it early in your high school career. You might volunteer in local government or politics. Get involved with your district representative or, during an election year, work on a political campaign. Some local government offices also have page programs that may serve as a good entry point for you. You can create meaningful connections through your own prolonged involvement in local and regional politics and government. Community Crime Profile Survey with Questions à à à à à The small community of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ is the one square mile home to a comparatively tiny population of approximately 7,600 people, including myself. I live on a residential street of this small suburban town where a great threat of danger and harm has never really been associated with its name. The crime rate on the city-data.com crime index is a minute 35.6 when compared to the U.S. average of 330.6. In the year of 2002 Wood-Ridge did not experience any murders, rapes, or robberies, and only 1 assault, 35 larceny counts, and 7 auto thefts. This is the main reason why all parties who were surveyed either felt very safe or somewhat safe living their lives in this neighborhood and believe crime has either decreased or stayed the same. All parties surveyed also rated the following services from acceptable to excellent: ambulance, cable television, electric utilities, fire, gas, phone, and police. Then when surveyed about police more closely the answers only v aried from good to excellent, with most answers in the excellent range. I found this survey relatively easy to perform. My town issues a small phone book of all persons living in town and I drew names at random and surveyed whoever was willing to offer their time. I surveyed five people ages 18-29, one person age 30-39, seven people ages 40-49, six people ages 50-59, and two people over 69 years of age. Seventeen of these people were male and only four were female, 100% of which was Caucasian. Two parties resided in apartments, while nineteen lived in a house. Eighteen families owned the residence they lived in and three rented, and obviously 100% of them have telephones in their homes. Of the parties surveyed, thirteen had full-time jobs, three were self-employed, one was a student, one was unemployed, and three parties were retired. The five most predominant problems exemplified from this survey were the amount of youths that are hanging out on the streets, the use of alcohol, alo ng with the use of drugs, traffic violations, and vandalism. I wanted to Interview a male who has experienced similar experiences with not being accepted because he was not the stereotypical ââ¬Å"man. â⬠In our Interview the other day, I asked you If you agreed or disagreed with this statement: ââ¬Å"Every child, boy or girl, should have the right to his or her own self image, and should not have to live by some gender rolesâ⬠(Freeman 36). You answered yes in agreement! I asked you why you said yes so quickly. Your answer was because growing up you faced situations when you wished you could simply be yourself thou the Judgment of others.You shared your thoughts of what the stereotype of a man Is to you. Some common Images of a man Is to be athletic, masculine, muscular, insensitive, and tough. I'm sure you could have gone on with this list of characteristics expected of a ââ¬Å"manly man. â⬠Women are expected to be a particular way, also. Some of us Just don't fall under those expected traits. Still, most people tend to ho ld common stereotypes of certain people in mind. We both went to the same high school and cheered on our Varsity cheer squad for 2 years together.I was glad that you decided to share this part of your life with me, I know It was hard to talk about. In high school you didn't dress Like all the other boys, and you didn't talk like all the other boys. You were a male cheerleader. You were the only male cheerleader. You expressed the hardship and ridicule our peers put you through. I felt a deep sorrow when you told me that our peers would tease you. Teasing is for elementary school, not high school. I could see the pain in your eyes when you would state the comments the students would make towards you.It Is definitely a common assumption for people to make that because a male Is a cheerleader, then he must be gay. You do not consider yourself to fit the gender role of a typical male, because you are very much the opposite. I felt it was necessary to ask you about your childhood. I want ed to know how you grew up and if there was any influences in your life pertaining to the topic of gender stereotypes. Growing up you said that you didn't play with car toys, or ride motorcycle bikes, and wasn't into sports.In Freeman's essay he TLD play with parable dolls, or play tea party with the other little girls, and she loved playing basketball. When I asked you if you had played sports, you said no but you would play catch in the park with your dad. I am sorry to have heard that your father passed away when you were very young. I was surprised to hear that you do not think that your father passing away influenced you to be more in touch with your feelings. You have always been more in touch with your feelings even before that incident. Most people think that a boys father passing away will greatly Influence theDuring our interview, your brother, Corey came in to greet me. That was polite of him! I asked you how your relationship was with your brother, since you two are very opposite of each other. Your brother seems to fit the mold of our society's ââ¬Å"man. â⬠I was devastated to hear that your relationship with your brother has been strained for years. It started when you became a cheerleader, because he doesn't accept the fact that that is who you are and that is what makes you happy. Freeman and her mother's relationship was also uneasy because of her mother's lack of support.On the contrary, your relationship with your mother is beautiful, and stable. You expressed your thankfulness and appreciation for her in our interview. She has not turned her back on you, or Judged you. Your mother accepts you for who you are. You are her son and she loves you no matter what happens. I enjoyed our interview. Thank you for taking the time to sit down with me and discuss the questions I had for you. I am happy that you are absolutely content with yourself. We have been friends for a couple of years now, and I wouldn't change you for anything.
